On 1st of February we had an Energy Awareness Day at our school. As part of the day, Mr Seamus Hahessy, Mr Sean Haughney, Mrs Patricia Murphy and Mrs Moira Duggan visited our school and spoke about how energy used to be generated before there was electricity in the school. It was very interesting to hear about how much work was involved in heating and lighting the school in the past – and how much work the children had to do, for example helping with cutting and storing the turf and drawing water to heat for hand washing. Our guests brought along some interesting items for us to look at including a battery powered radio, an old battery (so much bigger than modern batteries!), a sleat for cutting turf, an oil powered lamp and an old iron.
